Khumba tells the story of a zebra who is born with only half his stripes. When he is blamed for the lack of rain by the rest of his superstitious herd Khumba embarks on a journey across the Karoo in search of a magical watering hole where legend says the first zebras got their stripes.
Two of the movie’s stars; Khumba the half-striped zebra, and Mama V – the overprotective but bighearted wildebeest visited pre-primary schools in Gauteng and the Western Cape, delighting kids and teachers alike with a 15 minute industrial theatre show, giving the audience a small glimpse into their lives by showcasing the fun they have as friends growing up in the beautiful Karoo.
The show, brought to you by HDI Youth Marketeers teaches kids about the importance of friendship, kindness and bravery; and has even started a new dance revolution which had hundreds of kids and teachers getting on their feet and learning the unique “Dassie Dance”.
Two lucky groups of fans enjoyed a pre-release screening of the movie. The movie was shown at the Zone @ Rosebank in Johannesburg on 17 October and at Tyger Valley Mall in Cape Town on 18 October 2013.
The Khumba franchise has partnered with South African family’s favourite restaurant chain Wimpy, ahead of its premiere on Friday 25 October 2013. Characters from the movie have been spotted at Wimpy stores around the country, surprising unsuspecting Wimpy customers.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and your cameras ready at Wimpy stores this weekend to get your Khumba collectable with any kid’s meal.
Local audiences will be delighted by Khumba – the first movie to be made available in both English and Afrikaans.
